From: Los Angeles | posted: 12/2/2005 at 5:19:47 PM ET Yeah it's very student oriented, but a nice theatre. I'm from there. Went to school right next to there, and actually performed in the theatre she's performing in. Very sad i can't go, because Unfortunately I now live in LA and can't see it. But if anyone is going , it'd be nice to see posts about it. Like you've guys been doing with the other concerts, that's really awesome. Sorry I haven't posted a lot. Don't have a computer myself... take care everyone!

It was basically identical to the one in Bethlehem...same songlist. She was pretty chatty and funny. She even said something like "its great to be here at the University of UConn" instead of the Unv of Connecticut. She sounded very good though she may have had a little cold. She sniffled a bit and was drinking a lot of water. She seemed in good spirits. Didnt see her afterwards. She probably bolted as it was downright freezing there. Hope to hear some more good reports from those of you going tomorrow night....you know who you are!

Did she mention Michael?
Would someone describe the set-up--I picture folks at little tables and lots of candles. How was the audience reaction.

Registered: 8/14/2003 | posted: 12/3/2005 at 8:32:39 AM ET We were sitting in the mezzanine on the right side...fairly close to the stage. The "orchestra" section was a bunch of small tables with chairs around them but the chair looked to be stationary. So, if your chair wasnt facing the stage, you might be pretty uncomfortable turning around. There was also a UCONN basketball game that started and ended the same time as the concert so traffic was a nightmare.
Now, off to see the decorated Newport Mansions. Flying back to MD this afternoon and then taking a bus to NY tomorrow. Oh, and a christmas party tonight. Can I squeeze anymore in?
There was no mention of Michael tonight.

| posted: 12/3/2005 at 5:59:57 PM ET I think Mandy pretty much covered it. Not much difference between this concert and her others. It was good. A very pleasant evening. However, it was very cold in Connecticut. But, Bernadette seemed to be in good spirits. She joked more than she did in Bethlehem. And the "This is my back" comment returned. :-)
Mandy and I waited by what we thought was the stage door. It wasn't. We saw Martin through the window but then he disappeared back into the theater, I guess. However, it was very very very cold and we didn't wait long. Seriously...........it was COLD. Snow and all.
The stage had two giant wreaths on either side, all lit up. The tables had candles that remained lit the entire concert. Her only encore was Count Your Blessings. She incorporated Rose's Turn into the concert itself, as the final number.
And I think that's it. It was a very enjoyable evening. Did I mention it was cold? HA!

I went to the Saturday night concert in Storrs, CT and I'm so happy I did. I have not seen Bernadette in concert since her Long Island concert less than two weeks after Michael died. That night, while still a good concert, was sad. She didn't really talk very much between songs, she was clearly very sad and in so much pain. I commented to my friends that night that "the sparkle is gone". You all know what I mean, that inner sparkle that makes Bernadette, well Bernadette. Of course none of this was surprising considering what she was going through but it was still so sad to see and I've thought about it a lot since that night. Would she ever heal enough again to get her sparkle back? Well last night I was just so truly happy to see that she is indeed healing and her on stage sparkle is definitely back. She was funny, flirting and just so on. The audience laughed at every joke or funny gesture she made whether obvious or subtle. She looked fantastic and was in extraordinary voice last night. And the audience was just amazing as well. I've often found that audiences on a college campus can be very unpredictable. You just never know who might show up but they were so into her and so alive. People were shouting out during the applause (she even broke into Nothing Like a Dame to say "thank you" after someone shouted and applauded her "bass notes"). Toward the end of the concert she made some comment about "before I say goodnight" and I heard someone gasp "oh no!". And then before she did her encore "Count Your Blessings" some guy yelled out "Don't Go". It's like the entire audience just didn't want the evening to end. Each song received enthusiastic and prolonged applause. I just sat there the entire time with a smile on my face. I was so happy for her and so happy I was there to experience it. Fever got quite a reaction when she first started it. I guess she's done it enough that she is getting known for it because the music barely started and there was "recognition applause". After the orchestra stopped snapping their fingers (when they had to play) it was only quiet for a minute or two before the audience started snapping for her and kept it up the entire time she was lounging on the piano. Time Heals Everything was EXTREMELY emotionally delivered. Her voice actually got lost on one word because she seemed very choked up. I'm not sure if that was due to personal reasons or she just really got into it. Not A Day Goes By was also very emotional but not as much as Time Heals. I noticed Bernadette looked down at her wedding ring several times during the concert as she was just starting a song. I'm not sure what that was about but it was a purposeful look and somewhat prolonged. She had her entire bridal set on (which she normally does for concerts) and the diamonds shimmered in the spotlight along with her dress. I had heard from many of you on this board that she had added My Funny Valentine into her concert which she had not done by the time of the Long Island concert. This has never really been one of my favorite songs and I had heard Bernadette sing it on a talk show several years back but last night, Oh My God, it was beautiful and so touching. She really just completely changed my opinion on the song because of her interpretation and delivery last night.
The friend I went with (who is a UConn alum) overheard Bernadette talking to some people after the show and said that her voice and overall demeanor seemed rather somber so she seems (not surprisingly so) to still be working toward getting that sparkle back in her personal life but she's clearly feeling much better while performing.
Anyway, just a wonderful night.

I like your description of the audience reaction.

My book club read The Year of Magical Thinking by Joan Didion. The book, which recently won the National Book Award for nonfiction, is Didion's chronicle of her first year of grief following her husband's death from a heart attack. Before her husband's death (John Dunne was also a writer), their daughter, Quintana, went into a full body infection following pneumonia and was on life support. Quintana recovered enough to attend her father's memorial, but never fully recovered enough to fight off infections and died this summer, after Didion finished her book.
Didion did not alter the book in any way or add an afterword, and says that she has no intention of writing about Quintana's death.
She is embarking on a book tour-in an interview with the New York Times Magazine, she says that she intends to keep "very busy."
One of our members, who recently lost her daughter, commented that the "public duties"-working and just general interaction with people-were not the hardest things. The private times-the alone times when you were not bound by social mores-are the hardest. Those of us who have lost dearly loved ones concurred. It's so true.
If you have a chance to read The Year of Magical Thinking, do. Some members were *very* hesitant to read it, because of the subject matter. And there were times, as one of our members said, that you had to put the book down and just breathe. But,my God, one of the most extraordinary things I've ever read, and I'm so, so very sorry Didion had to write it. I read it in three days and I finished it last Monday, and I can't remember the last time I've read something that's stayed with me for this long. Something will happen or someone will say something, and I'll think of the book. For those that grieve, it is confirmation that you are not crazy and not alone in thinking and doing certain things.
I do know that those who have grieved or are grieving (and Didion makes an excellent distinction between mourning and grief) had explosive reactions to the book. I know I plan on reading it again. Not right away, though. And if you're in a book club, you'll have one of the most extraordinary discussions you may ever have.

Jenn - I've been seeing quite a few people reading that lately and I didn't know what it was about. Thank you for giving that brief synopsis. Definitely on my Christmas list now.

UCONN was performing Into the Woods while she was there and she commented that she could hear them singing from her bathroom. Kinda cute! Glad to hear her humor and "sparkle" extended into Saturday's performance as well.
